Ok I've been thinking about getting 1024 MB of ram for my computer for some time now. Currently I have 2 x 256 PC3200 400Mhz.

My Motherboard has 1 extra slot open... now here is my question.

Should I take the cheaper way out and just buy a single 512 MB stick for the last slot?

Or

Should I take the more expensive route and get 2 sticks of 512?

well the problem is the compatibility with your motherboard and RAM cards. also sometimes certain RAM cards are incompatible with other RAM cards so in order for you to upgrade to a Gig of RAM if you were to keep your old ram cards you would have to find out if your current chips are Registered or Unregistered ram cards then find a 512 chip from the same manufactuerer as your current one that has a speed of 400mhz and pc3200. Its cheaper i know but buying the 2 new 512 is less hassle.

Well did some searching and this is what I came up with.

Here's my motherboards DDR 400 table for all the sticks that it can take. (Table at very bottom)

This is the EXACT Ram I have in my computer right now. As you can see it's also the second 400 ram on the Asus table.

Now the 512 Stick I think is this but I am not 100% sure...

Well, more RAM is always better, but there's a point where you probably won't notice a difference. I think I'd buy one first, then see how it affects your performance and see if you really feel you need more.

You notice a difference going from 512 to 1024. If the chips are the same speed and work with each other, then it does not matter.

I have 2 x 256 and 1 x 512 for my gig of ram.

Oh, I know he'd see a difference there, but what I mean is that if he tries that out and things are moving well, maybe he won't feel like buying even more will make enough of a difference to be worth it.

you'll notice a difference untill you hit over 2gb without a 64 bit processor. the CPU can't access anything over that.
