Well, first off, don't try and kill me. EA's press conference was not bad but really, compared to Nintendo's conference, I'd say that Nintendo will win E3 this year. Screw Sony and its PSP.

Have you heard about the Nintendo DS? I mean what was said at the conference. I mean, first thing you should know is the Nintendo Developer System (Dual Screens was better, IMO) will have backwards compatibility with Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games. Great, right? Well, secondly there is the 2D and 3D graphical styles. The DS is powerful enough to surpass the N64 graphics -- so seeing ports is likely going to occur (Mario 64 and OoT, anyone?). The touch screen has been confirmed, too.

Oh, that was just for starters. I mean, really. The system will feature two types of wireless (WIRELESS MAN) connectivity. How many can play? Try 16 gamers! Don't forget about online -- play people around the world. Oh, and you can chat and send images, too, supposedly. There's voice recognition to, just to add that little tidbit in there. Where do the features stop? Not yet. It has standby and sleep modes to alert you if there's a DS gamer NEAR you and to save batteries. Awesome.

And look at the titles coming out. First one that should be mentioned is Metroid Prime: Hunters. Then there are:

Activision: Spiderman 2
Atari: Project TBA
Bandai: One Piece, other games TBA
Banpresto: Dragon Ball Z
Capcom: Megaman Battle Network, Viewtiful Joe DS, Gyakuten Saiban
Electronic Arts: Need for Speed
From Software Project TBA
Hudson: Bomberman, other projects TBA
Koei: Dynasty Warriors
Konami: Frogger 2005, Yu-Gi-Oh: Nightmare Troubadour
Majesco: Project TBA
Namco: Mr. Driller, TBA RPG
Sega: Project Rub
Square Enix: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Egg Monster Hero, Dragon Quest Monsters
Tecmo: Monster Rancher
THQ: Spongebob Squarepants
Ubisoft: Rayman
Vivendi: Project TBA

Some good titles in there, no doubt, but they aren't the only ones. Super Mario Bros. DS, Animal Crossing DS, Mario 64 DS (with multiplayer, somehow). JUST AWESOME

Anyway, besides that, REALISTIC ZELDA! IGN had told us anyway, but really, it's confirmed, and the MOVIE (CLICK -- BIG BUT WORTH IT) (http://media.nintendo.com/mediaFiles/b080225c-960e-4a52-a2c6-d7db10bdaef0.mov) is awesome looking. It's WAAAY better than that old Spaceworld 2001 movie where Link and Ganondorf battle -- this is truly way better. "BLADES WILL BLEED" ooooooooooh.

Those are the biggest highlights. Don't forget about Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and its multiplayer. That will be fun.

Anyway, I'm happy with Nintendo's conference. Everything sounds and LOOKS awesome. Watch the Zelda movie...

That makes me excited and angry at the same time. I am excited becuase it looks like Nintendo is finaly doing online stuff, and secondly because the DS is starting to sound good. I am mad because they strait out said that it would not be compatable with any other Nintendo system, they lied to me. But in all, it is a good thing, and I am happy =). Good job Nintendo. On a side note, it still seems that Microsoft might have a better show.

Knowing Nintendo the DS will be out by the time we are driving hydrogen fuel cell cars. Follow the piper and fall in the river. I won't say anything until I see confirmed release dates, and prices.

The backwards compatibility is helpful in selling me on the DS because I never bought the SP so this is an upgrade both in having DS support plus a better way to play GBA.

Overall, I thought the conference was quite stunning between the DS and Zelda and Nintendo will be the best of show.

I posted an editorial about the Nintendo conference at XE's sister site Nintendo Evolved.

You posted that editorial? The DS is has supposedly slightly better graphical capabilities than N64 - so I don't know where you can believe stuff about it being said it was like the DC, I think you got that mixed up with the rumoured specs of the next GB (which, BTW, I think is the DS in disguise!).

Anyway...hey MoX ;) No need to be sorry, as much as I've blasted Nintendo for doing stupid things...they needed to make up for last year's E3 and they definitely did that. I'm not too blown away by the realistic Zelda though, I've never really liked the Zelda series so it isn't "megaton" for me. Looks good though, and it's got a whole lot of fanboys excited :P

Just a hi and a cheap pop at John -- I too wasn't expecting much about the DS, but you were over dissing the thing in your sigs...turns out that DS is the little machine that could ;)

Okay, maybe I'm a little confused here.

What does Microsoft have that will make it win this year's E3? I mean, Halo 2, Jade Empire, The Sith Lords, and Fable are all great games or appear to be great, but Microsoft overdid the whole Xbox Live thing. Xbox Live Arcade and Video? What a waste of time, IMO.

Anyway, besides those titles, what does Microsoft have? I'm impressed with those titles but not much else, really.

Zelda has been out since 1987. Ever since Ocarina of Time, people have been wanting more of that style of Zelda. Then Spaceworld 2001 came, and a battle between Link and Ganondorf was displayed. Guess what? People raved about it. Then it was "scrapped," and GUESS what? The graphics now look like shit compared to this new Zelda. So all in all, this title has ben in anticipation for MANY years. While you may think Halo 2 is more anticipated, I'd be willing to bet you're wrong.

Don't forget Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime: Hunters (DS). Man, there's so much flying around -- and the DS is getting MANY great titles. I haven't bought a Game Boy in so long, but this DS has impressed me -- I WILL buy this SOB.

Nintendo surprised AND impressed me. Microsoft has not.

Nintendo owned the show. Plain and simple.

And don't give me the "Zelda isn't even playable, so it doesn't count" crap.

Last year, Half Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and HALO 2 owned the show. And guess what? They weren't playable.

So Nintendo PWNS E3 this year. Great times indeed. ;)

umm...... why would you post a movie that is just sound?

MoX

I didn't. If you would have downloaded it you might would have know it's not just sound -- it's a full video with sound. And if you downloaded it and it was only sound, I suggest you download QuickTime. (probably: http://www.apple.com/quicktime )

Actually, the sound only problem is probably that it's DivX encoded, and you don't have the DivX codec. I have to say that although Microsoft's show was cool, Nintendo's was pretty cool, too. The DS rocks. We got to play it, even! They had Metroid: Hunter multiplayer going, and it was really cool. For the first time, a FPS can work on a handheld! You used the d-pad to move, and the stylus on the screen to steer.

A lot of the E3 videos were DivX encoded.

Nintendo does have a Hell of a lot of new games coming out, and from what I've seen from the videos it did look like it kicked all other's asses. Half-Life 2, KillZone (even though there was no gameplay), and Jade Empire were the games that really caught my attention.

I already have quick time.

I'm not a PC gamer, but isn't the use of the stylus for Metroid Hunters slightly remenisent of PC FPS games? Actually...wouldn't moving the stylus on the screen you're meant to be watching get in the way?

Yeah, it's pretty much just like using your mouse on a PC. As for it getting in the way, I didn't feel like it did.

There were so many great games coming out for Xbox and PC that I can't say Nintendo won as far as games go. It's more like Sony lost, and there was a 3-way tie for first. In the new hardware race, though, Nintendo was the clear winner.

Really? What are you using? It doesn't make any sense. If you've downloaded the codec and it still doesn't work...do you have the latest QuickTime and all? No idea. I've never been good with movies and their programs...

well, E3 is long over, and I think Nintendo had the best Hardware showing (with the DS) and a suprisingly strong Software showing (with games like Pikmin 2, RE4, MP2, and the donkey kong games) that really get me excited about this year (as far as Nintendo goes). However, I think that Xbox's software showing was just so massive, and full of great games (like Halo 2, Jade Empire, KOTOR 2, Doom3, Forza, DOA Ultimate, UC2, ect.) that it pretty much evens it out. So the best E3 showing is really just boiled down to personal preferience. New innovative hand-held, or tons of amazing games? Nintendo or Microsoft?

MoX

Nintendo had tons of amazing games too...maybe even just as much as Microsoft or more...

After doing my E3 Gamecube game list feature for NE, and reading the various hands-on here. I really think Nintendo managed to have the better software on display for my tastes (like you said slimscane, its about personal preference.) And then the DS was the big thing overall.

I think MS BARELY won or it was tied between Nintendo and Microsoft. Nintendo is just making up for totally sucking for the past what? Two-three years now?

I don't know where you can get off insulting Nintendo's showing in past years John...Microsoft was a non-factor until this past year. At least Nintendo has had big years before.

slimscane
05-30-2004, 03:43 AM
Come on, you can't even argue that Nintendo's showing at last years E3 was wavering on pathetic. Nintendo had some pretty good showings before last year's. Xbox as always had a pretty good show, but that isn't saying much because they have only had, what? 4? But aside from Xbox's first show, it has always been a continder, and many will tell you that last year they had the best show.

Iron Chef
05-30-2004, 07:20 AM
From what I heard they were actually booed because their showing was so poor.

As previously stated it all comes down to tastes. For some though it’s a matter of which team/camp/army they’re supporting.

Bondo
05-30-2004, 05:25 PM
I was not saying that Nintendo was good last year, I'm saying they have been good a number of times in the past.

As for Microsoft. The Xbox only really came to life last fall so theoretically they should have had a good show last E3, but all I remember hearing about was non-playable Doom 3 and non-playable Halo 2 and such.
