Remember that thread I made about your guy’s opinions on Macs? Well Bondo, one of Xbox Evolved’s staff members sold me his Mac. First here is some info on it, and what programs I use on computers usually:
Machine Model: Power Mac G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 384 MB
Bus Speed: 133 Mhz
Video Card: GeForce 3 64MB RAM
Software includes: latest version of Mac OS X, Adobe Design Suite Premium, Microsoft Office X, any software that came with OS X.
What I use comps for mostly: Writing, Webdesign, designing, art, internet, research, organization, downloading stuff, and a little bit of gaming.
Now that I have that out of the way, I would just like to say that even though this comp is roughly three years old, and used, it is pretty damned fast. The interface is very nice looking, and certain programs like Photoshop CS(8) run better than they do on my Dell Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, GeForce 4.
Then again some things seem to be about the same speed..but this comp’s CPU speed is also slower than an Xbox, so it overall is still impressive. The interface and how to do things takes some getting used to, but you get the point after 1-2 days. Some things are easier to do with the Apple button + a key, so it takes some memorization, but Windows has shortcuts to so eh.
The AIM program for Mac is pretty crazy looking…I have added a screen with this to show you guys. I found out that apparently, the optimization software to my Viewsonic monitor doesn’t work with this OS (works with OS 9 though) so I have to either figure out the problem, or return the monitor, but that isn’t Apple’s fault really that is the damned monitor’s fault. Hmm besides that this is “different” from Windows XP in that it’s just a different, sometimes, easier, sometimes harder. I am enjoying my experience, though; as I can do every single thing (other than big gaming) I did on the PC on this. Biggest problems I have found are some with compatibility with PC files, IE hasn’t been updated for Mac since 2001, and some things in the browser Safari display funny. Networking to my PC though to get files was easy. I will definitely probably buy a G5 if no problems occur with this.
