Ok so i got my scholarship from my granddad and i relized that my computer is a total POS thing and i need a new one. (anyone not knowing what POS stands for look in the early shouts, haha good luck!) anyway, i was looking at some kick ass computers online and the best site, what PC Gamer is obsest with is www.ibuypower.com and it is the shizel! so im getting a computer with my scholarship money! oh and why im spending it is because i already paid for school with my own money already.

Here is the question:

Where are good places to find a good computer?

I want a gaming computer and not a Damn POS one that i have.

Price range $1k to $2k
thanks!

Check out http://www.newegg.com and piece together you PC. Its fun, easy, and you know the insides out of your PC. Plus you will save a bundle and get a better quality machine for your buck.

Before I got my Mac I REALLY wanted a comp from Ibuypower, they are like the Wal-mart of kickass comps, or i.e. cheaper Alienware.

Like the Wolfman said, building your computer is the cheapest and best option. Of course, if you don't want to build one, then yes, I would recommend purchasing a computer from IBuyPower. From what I have heard and read they seem to build solid systems at great prices.

Yeah, that is one of the best priced retail computers I have ever seen, but I still think building it is the way to go. You get better hardware for your buck, its fun and easy, plus you get to know the insides-out of your rig. :D

I would build a pc if I knew how. How did all you guys learn how to build one?

There are tons of good resources that can help. Plus it makes sense once you get your hands down in there a little.

I learned while updating and fixing old computers. Plus, before it was popular to buy a PC from a manufactorer, you had to buy kits and put it together on your own. Me and my dad built out first PC. It was awesome. Thats back when he knew more about them than me. That soon changed fast.

Yeah. I learned about computers pretty quickly. I guess it would be the same with building them.

Zzero

The best way to learn is to take apart a computer you aren't using and try to figure out what everything is and does. Then try and put it back together and see if it works fine.

Yeah I think I might do that. I have a ****ty old something I cant even remember what kind it is. I think ill just mess around with that.

I can only change somethings
i once tried to change my video card and found out i dont have an AGP port, a f@^@%^ AGP PORT! i am so mad i need a new computer!

Zzero
02-18-2004, 11:36 PM
Haha yeah my computer before this one, an HP, didn't have an AGP port. That when I flipped out. Sony, HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, its all the same. They just want your money. Its all about building your own computer or getting a custom built one from Alienware, Falcon-NW, IBuyPower, or someone else. It's more affordable to build your own, but some people just don't know how and are to lazy to learn.

Captain Obvious

yeah it is an HP such crap!

On the front page of Ibuypower.com I think Im gonna get the first pc on the left. Or do you guys think I should get the second one over? Ive never had anything besides and intel pentium processor and would really like to try something new. The first one is a good price and I can have the money in no time.

If you want to give the AMD processor a shot, heres what I recommend changing/modifying:

- Upgrade to at least 512 MB memory.
- Upgrade the hard drive to a SATA drive instead of normal ATA.
- Upgrade the video card to either the GeForce FX 5600 or the ATI 9600.
- The system doesn't come with any OS installed. Make sure you choose to have Windows XP installed on the system.

Ill try that. I changed the power to 450 watt. I have 277 saved up and would really like to keep it below 600 dollars so I dont know. Ill see what it adds up to when I change those things.

Dude thats expensive. Are you buying or building that?

For $1,366.98 you can build the following PC I have listed. Its not quite exactly the same as your, but if you spend about another $200-$300 you could get the same exact specs.

Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz Processor
Kingston HyperX Series 184 Pin 1024MB DDR PC-2700
Seagate 120GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
MSI Black 52x32x52 CD-RW Drive
NEC Black Bezel 4X DVD +RW/-RW Drive
MITSUMI Black 1.44MB 3.5INCH Floppy Disk Drive
ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9800 PRO Video Card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS PCI Sound Card
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Just like SilentDeath has stated, you can use the AMD FX to play games. And yes, they do run better than they would on a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition. The AMD FX is a 64-bit processor at heart but has the ability to emulate a 32-bit environment or something like that which is what allows it to run 32-bit applications.

The AMD FX's moddo is "We run the 32 bit applications of today, and the 64 bit applications of tomorrow" lol.

If anything i choose amd over pentuim because it beats it with lower gigz and a cheaper price :-) Does better in processing games to. I would choose a pentuim for reiablity because amd need of cooling. So you gotta watch out for that. Still i ll go witha a AMD though...

WolfmanNCSU
03-09-2004, 03:07 PM
Yeah, I think the Pentuim is a better chip, but the prices on AMD are awesome. I am running on an AMD now (1.4 Ghz TBird). It does the job nicely.

WolfmanNCSU

Me, too - using most of it to pay stuff off. :toomuch:

I am taking some of it to goof off with, though. I'll probably use it to buy the box set of the entire Monty Python series. :D
