Okay, i just spoke with my mother and she said cable people dont care about us out here, but she said we might could get DSL through the phone line. Can any of you give me information on what that is, how its done, how fast it is, is it better then direcway sattelite, will it work with XBL, will it be laggy, blah blah blah.

lol, i have dsl, and it works fine, its just as fast as cable, i got it from telus. Although it did take a few days for the damn thing to work....it finally did, but the point is, its cheaper than cable, just as fast, if not faster, and ya, there ya go

I live in the UK and most DSL services here are faster than Cable anyway. It's mainly due to the faster upload speed which is the main factor for Live.

Okay, i looked up on a internet thing and it said the only internet highspeed we could get out here is our current sucky sattelite, so i guess i need to contact someone and tell them Hey! We need cable out here, help us!
So uh, who should i call?

DSL isn't as good as cable.
Cable is always good, DSL can be better than cable, equal to cable, or worse than cable depending on where you live, and who you buy it from.
Since you live in a small town I bet it'll be worse.
Additionally DSL sucks if you want to host matches.

If you want to set up your own cable server you'll need some tech geeks to set it up for you. It has been done in small desert towns who don't have cable support, but I think they could do it because they had high level terrain nearby. So you still might be out of luck.

Yea if you cant get DSL through the phone line it's no good.

Cable is better then DSL... I've had both.

They both seemed to run about the same speed internet wise, but when I play games or download things the speeds on cable were considerablely faster.

Also try SBC yahoo... ameritech is in almost every town.

I've had a bad experience with them, but if they are the only ones I'd get it... Just make sure they understand your a House and not a business.

They thought I was business and they sent me a 16 port purple router... with an outrageous connections speed. Of course they mixed me up with somone else... they said they were sorry and they would have a guy come in and get the router... I still have the router... I'm not whineing though my friends like that big thing for Lan parties lol.

You cant beat going broadband now... it's the same price if you get a second phone line. Cept broadband is way way! more faster and doesnt hold up your home phone.

.. well uh i don't know what to do, neither does my mom. i started a petition, here is it how it goes:'

Hello, this petition hopefully will get my community high-speed internet, you see i live near many towns, and it seems they all have
many high-speed services, however all we can get is dial up and satellite.
Me and my family do alot on the computer, we do our school, pay the bills,
and do many other important things on the computer, which are very hard to do with such un-reliable, slow internet.
I admit doing important things isn't all we do, me and my brother enjoy playing online games on the computer,
and are also interested in using our gaming consoles to play many popular online games.
I mean we are home schooled so it's a fun way to pass time. I don't understand
why this community cannot receive high-speed internet, it's not like we live in the jungle.
I have alot of neighbors, there is a local church, and it's very close to town,
which can receive high-speed internet. I do not know what else to do, and someone suggested i start a petition.
I hope you agree with me and will sign this, please don't put offensive comments, sign with your full name, and try to keep this organized.
Also, only sign if you really think we should be able to receive it, i do not know who
i am going to show this to yet, but i will find it. Maybe i will send it to different high-speed internet companies.
Thank you for reading, and hopefully signing.

Eh, who do i show it to and do with it? Anyone know? I really want cable/dsl, all i need to know is how to do it and we can do whatever is needed to get it, we crave it, we need it, and this whole family will fight for it!

Well I read it and I'd like to tell you not to add the part about liveing in a jungle. Not to be mean or anything, but if you show that to a company like comcast they may laugh at you or not take you serious.

If you have cable on your television then it shouldnt be that hard for the companies to spread out more.

If you do manage to get this all filled out I do believe atleast one company will spread out their access if ofcourse they make a profit out of it. Companies stay close to towns because thats where the money is, more people more moeny ;).

But if you show them that it is possible for them to make a profit if they move out more they will gladly do it.

You seem to know what your talking about, so i was wondering if you can kind of re-word it. I want it to seem as good as it can, and then i guess i will remake it on the pc notepad and print it out and send it to.. alot of cable/dsl companies?

To: Our city leaders, and the local phone & cable utilities

We, the citizens of (Your City or County), are tired of broken promises regarding high-speed Internet connectivity. Most of us access the Internet from our homes and many of us depend on it because we conduct work out of our homes online. We are tired of having to dial up with unreliable 56k modem speeds. We are tired of being disconnected and having to reconnect over and over. We want (and many of us need) faster connectivity that can only be provided at reasonable costs by our local telephone and cable companies. We are a professional and modern community and feel entitled to receive modern services.

By signing this petition, we are expressing our support of efforts to get our community connected at higher speeds so that we can be more productive. We want to encourage our city leaders to make our communications infrastructure a priority. We encourage them to work with the phone companies and cable provider so that high speed Internet can become a reality in our community.

Sincerely,

Insert Name Here

Feel free to add/remove stuff.

You have to get signatures before you send it to local companies...

Myukoi,

I was looking into a upgrading my dsl a couple of wks ago because my company was willing to pay up to $50 a month and I was currently paying $30 for dsl. Here's some information regarding down and upload speeds and a great site.

dial up download 56-32Kb upload 8-5Kb
Directway download 1000-300Kb upload 130-50Kb
DSL download 1.5-.768Mb upload 150-100Kb
Cable 3.0MB-1.0Mb upload 250-100

there is no best service:
-what's available in your area and the price
-for dsl a lot depends how far away you are from a CO, the further you are away the slower your dsl service; if you a certain distance from a CO they will cap you at 768Kb
-for cable it all depends on who your sharing your line with and the time of day; peak hrs your going to be a lot slower or if your sharing your line with a downloading pirate down the street
-a great spot for researching all of this is dslreports.com
-if you go to dslreports.com/archive it will show you the avg. downloading and uploading speeds for the wk for individual broadband suppliers
*if satelite is your only option, I believe you can get a 2-way system hooked up, by using the satelight for downloading and dial up for only uploading, but i don't know a lot about it
* i hope this helps and good luck with your petition

My mom said years ago cable/dsl people came out here and was going to do it, but there wasn't enough people so they only did it to the side of evergreen that's near farmerville and has the farmerville #, so she said the probally won't this time. Should i still send it to all these people?
