I will first point out that it uses 2 processors, something developers hate dealing with. I will also like to point out it is a gimmick that sounds like Nintendo made to suit their needs, lastly I will just say it is a dumb idea. Your thoughts please.

It is a handheld...and it doesn't sound cheap, thus I will be passing. I think it could be utilized in a meaningful way, but not to the extent to make it viable. Dumb idea only in the marketability though.

DS isn't an abbreviation? Too bad.

Joanna_Dark17

DS is abbreviated for Dual Screens.

My thoughts are:

Creative but may end up like the Virtual Boy had.

I dont know if it's processor is easy to work with. Nintendo's not stupid enough to make something and force/headache the developers.

JohnXE

Well it is an abbreviation of Dual Screen.

Looks like a waste to me. I will be passing as well, but I always do on handhelds.

I'm with you all the way. I like my Virtual Boy because it's weird and not too many people have one, but I think this will be another flop. It just sounds too gimmicky. There are games that this would be great for, but not enough to make a successful console out of it. The big N's creative... but not always in a good way. All that having been said, I'll probably buy one anyway for my odd video game stuff collection.

I think that everything but the two screens sounds pretty cool. TWO SCREENS? Come on, that's just dumb. --~

yeah seriously. although on my computer 2 screens would be usefull I'd have my fullscreen games load into one and have my desktop on the other :D

I might get one, I like Nintendo. It depends on the price, and why they did it. If it's just a scam like FF Crystal Chronicles GBA links, or that lame PS2 camera thing then I'll pass it up. Ever since I paid 70$ for a furby, I've hated gimmicky things.

LOL - furby... we have one of those, too.

The EyeToy (PS2 camera thing) has actually been so successful they're considering putting it into the PS3 as a standard feature. We've (the wife and I, that is) had too many other good games to play lately, but we're probably going to pick one of those up next month. Spazzy stuff like that is always a big hit at parties.

I probably am not going to buy a DS anyways....

It doesnt seem that interesting...

Time shall tell. People thought this whole "Pong" thing was retarded, so it might be good. If they have some good graphics, and good games, then it might go down.

I forgot about this thread - we did buy an EyeToy, and it's pretty fun to play.

Most consoles have more than one processor John. And the DS looks awesome.

Stop your fanboyism.

Is it a gimmick? Sure, what isn't? Just look at your friggin sig.

DS is awesome, and I WILL be buying one! I hope the price is actually $150 and it stays that way. A portable N64 (better than an N64, really) with awesome games sounds awesome, right?

E3 definitely sold me on the DS, now I just wish its release would get here so I can have it along with Mario 64x4 and Metroid. All very good. Plus backwards compatible so I can replace my GBA to have chargable battery and backlighting.

If they can make good use of the two screens that would be good.

MoX
05-14-2004, 01:13 AM
Let's say they can't. It'll still own. (But I'm quite sure they didn't just add the two screens for looks...that'd be a waste of money). So far we haven't seen a whole LOT of the dual screens in motion, but the maps WOULD help out a lot. Especially with a game like Metroid. When I first satarted playing Metroid Prime, I got a little confused in areas. This should definitely help, IMO.

I agree with that. The DS has better graphics then the N64 which will pwn but I don't see the reason for the extra screen.

MoX

I no longer feel that way -- E3 changed my thoughts. Its features are too good to ignore...and the games are looking sweet. (for DS-styled graphics)

As long as they make new microgames (which it seemed to be) instead of the rubbish excuse for a game the GCN version seems to be with mostly the same stuff. The GBA version is my favorite GBA game so far.

MoX
05-15-2004, 02:41 PM
Well, a lot of people don't have GBA ever if they like Nintendo. (read: me)

I won't play the game, though. Not for GameCube.

Also, yes, Anarchey, he means John Olin. And why are you confused? John got up-close-and-personal with the DS, I'm sure. I know the guys over at GameCube Advanced did, so I would assume John did as well.

Anarchey

Sorry, when he says Olin, that very well could be me, and yes, John just got home, and he made away like a bandit from E3. he has too much shit. and a MGS3 album. He was saying how cool the DS was.

I love Wario Ware, it is the perfect GBA game, and with the cool touch screen 'micro'games they were showing, the DS version should be even better. That side scrolling mario game looked pretty sweet too. I am not sure about Metroid: Hunters, the control scheme sounded pretty wierd, however, the Sessman (Adam Sessler, Xplay) said it was actually really cool, and good, after you get use to it (which he said takes a couple of seconds. I am really excited about DS, it is going to be at the top of my Christmass list! =)

The graphics are ****ing awsome for a hand held. It wasn't that long ago i was talking how eventually graphics would be as good as N64 for portables, but i didn't think it would come so soon. Though i'm not spending a massive was of cash for a hand held.

Did you see PSP? Its graphics are crap compared to DS. Ironicly enough, Playstation has by far the worse hardware but is always on top.

Slim, John said Sessler was an ass. I don't know how that pertains(sp?) to the subject, I just thought it was funny.

=( I heard, ::crying::, i know john isn't a liar, but it can't be true, i mean, the sessman is the coolest =(... Maybe he was just upset at the time becuase "Whore-agian" Webb did something stupid... or something =(

Anarchey
05-16-2004, 03:07 AM
nope, he said that he was cursing and yelling at people and coming in drunk and whatnot. I prefer Webb because of the funny feeling I get when I see her. My wee-wee gets stricken with a case of rigor mortis.

Oh, and the PSP graphics are *SUPPOSED* to be close to PS2 graphics. Now, how this is going to happen I don't know, but PS2 graphics AREN'T that impressive anyway. The system is just now getting 'better' textures and that's only because the system is coming to an end. (PS3 is nearing)

Yeah, I'll need to talk to John Olin soon on AIM. About XE stuff. We're kinda disorganized now.

I don't prefer "Ms. Webb" becuase she takes away from the Sessman, I mean, I guess she is okay and all, but the only reason why X-Play is better than Extended Play is because of the production values. Anyway, I am sure Adam just had a bad night or something, may he gets angry when he gets drunk, but I just can't see him being an ACTUALL jerk. =)

Wow - so much to say after a whole week away. The controls on Metroid: Hunter worked really well after getting used to them, and it really only takes a few seconds.

As for Sessler, I haven't seen him on TV, but I agree with what John said about him in person. He seemed very self-absorbed.

Let's see - what else... oh, yeah. The WarioWare game was really cool. I don't care for the current one, but this one just worked for me. There was one game where things like carrots flew onto the screen, and you had to chop them.

They used the second screen to pretty good effect. In the Metroid game, the second screen held the level map. There was a Pac Man game, too, where you used the stylus on the bottom screen to roll Pac Man around, and the top screen showed the actual map he was moving in.

Now that I think about it, there are a few other cool apps for the second screen. Obviously, in an RPG, you could use it for either a world map, an inventory screen, or a screen for changing your active spells, but really, you could use it to add whatever button you want to any game, if A, B, X, Y, L, and R aren't enough.

I originally thought it was just a gimmick, and there wouldn't be many really good uses, but after playing it, I'm sold.

One thing I haven't seen mention of was a little chat program they had. You could use the stylus to draw a picture or write, either by hand or using a keyboard, then hit "Send" and send to the whole room. I'd hope that's a standard feature of the DS so that you could use the wireless stuff to ask if anyone in the area wants to play a specific game with you.

John said that he kept on saying "What?" "Yea!" and "OK!" and "UR Gay" and things to that effect when he was playing with the ds.

slimscane
05-18-2004, 12:43 AM
that makes me sad. But , I just realized it, with the DS we can have REAL, REALLY good RTSs! (Real Time Strategy). Think about it, it has never worked on the consoles because of the controlers, but with the DS you have the stylus that works like a mouse! Not only that, but with the two screens you could have inventory, or building/ character specs, or the map one the 'Non-thouch'. The touch screen would be where all the action is, moving your units/ building bases and stuff. Further more, with the buttons, all you would have to do is touch a building with the stylus, and one of two things could happen: a) the touch screen would go into the building stuff, so you could select with the stylus what you want, and the action would move to the non-touch so you can still see what is going on while you're building, or b) The touch screen stays with the action, while the non touch changes from map (or whatever) and shows what you can build/buy and you would use the buttons (a,b,x,y,L,R) as a type of 'hot-key', or c) both, you could choose which you wanted! If I had to choose one, it would be "B", but that is just me. And just think about the wireless LAN, and the WI-FI, it would be amazing!!! I might be getting ahead of my self, but just think about it! I hope a developer makes this a reallity, it would be SO awesome! =) what do you guys think? Have you all thought of any other sweet possibilities for the DS? =D

TuckerXE
05-18-2004, 02:07 AM
That's one thing I wasn't clear on - is only one screen a touch screen, or both?

Also, where did you find the pic, MoX? Are there more there?

Bondo
05-18-2004, 03:01 AM
My understanding is that both screens are touch screens.

Anarchey
05-18-2004, 04:22 AM
Nope, bottom is touch and top is normal. or switch that. Point is John said that there was only one touch screen.

slimscane
05-18-2004, 05:14 AM
it is the bottom one, i watched a couple of videos, it looks amazing! =)

Yep - the bottom screen was the one we used the stylus on.
