View Full Version : GTA III - worse than child molestation?

OK, I have to assume that this guy is serious, even though he's an idiot. Check out this article, which includes the quote:

"[What you can do in GTA III] is 10,000 times worse than the worst thing anybody thinks Michael Jackson ever did to a little boy - or than any lie the feds think Martha Stewart ever told them, or any line in any song that Bruce Springsteen ever sang that rankled a cop in the Meadowlands."

Ouch, but you can also stop crime, and rescue people buy rushing them to the hospital, and drive a cab.

See, there is more than blowing **** up and having sex with whores.

But that's all the media is interested in.

There is!? j/k

The game is pretty deep.

Those kids who "played" vice city (in the real world) are complete morons. They just used as a exuse, they were probley bored rich brats. I wouldn't be surprised if some bored parent made that up just to stir up ****. Its just a freaking game! That be like saying, "What if a kid plowed a bi-plane into a good year blimp after playing crisom skies." Or "Some kids impaled them selves to deaths with massive spikes after playing Vodoo Vince" Or "Some guy said he help someone out with something but then turned around and killed him after playing Star Wars KOTOR". Or "Some kid shot his friend in the face with a dart gunt to see him die dramatically like in XIII". Or "Some kids put on black spandex and night vision goggles, hid in the shadows only to wiff can's at passerbyers heads....." Ok maybe not. But you get the picture.

The game is rated mature. Its up to the parents to monitor what their kids are playing and read the rateing. Or even easier, if its a xbox you can control what games their kids can play even if their not around. If a kids a violent little brat don't give him fodder.

GTA graphics aren;t very realistic. Blood doesn't spray like a fountain out peoples necks when shot. But if the graphics had Ninga Gaiden graphics **drools** that would be to awsome to imagine.
GTA may allow you to kill anyone, but you have to pay a price. If you get more than two stars, cops will hunt you down till you wasted or busted. At what point of the game can you get the army after you?

I originally found out about this at Penny-Arcade, and seeing as to how the guy left his e-mail, I decided to e-mail him this reply (Its nothing special, but the best I can do in 10 minutes :p ):

I have been playing video games all my life, begining around the age of 5 when I bought my first console. I have played just about every game there is on the market, be it violent or not. Video games do not affect the majority of people that play them. Games like GTA III and Vice City aren't going to turn someone into a killer just because of the content of the game. I would say 99.9% of gamers actually have common sense and know that. Of course, that leaves the remaining .1% of people who arent mentally stable enough to be playing such games. Then again, these are the same people who shouldn't be watching rated R movies or the news every night. Why you ask? Take a guess. On the news every night, all you ever hear about are deaths related to gang violence or something along those lines. When it comes to movies, you have violence, drugs, and sex are thrown in there somewhere, just like in GTA. The only difference is GTA is made of many, many polygons while movies usually have human actors and FX for the violence and gore. What you see in the movies is much more realistic than what you might see in video games. So, stop blaming video games for societys problems. Adults need to wake up and realize that video games are a form of art and entertainment, and there is nothing you can do to stop them from being published thanks to the good old U.S. Constitution. Oh, by the way, you want to know why the ESRB rating system doesn't work? Its because parents don't do their part. If they were to actually pay some attention to what they were buying their kids they wouldnt have that problem.

I could go on and on about this topic, because I actually have a five page report due in my English class on this topic. I think I have gotten my point across. If I haven't, well, give me a little shout out, because I am more than willing to defend what has become more than just a hobbie, but a part of my everyday life. Maybe if you actually took the time to play some games and tried to enjoy them rather than criticize them, you'd be able to enjoy them. Then again, you do work for the media, and as we all know, nobody can trust you guys. By the way, I'm not sure if you have heard of Childs Play, but it was run by the gang over at Penny-Arcade, a gaming related website that was able to raise thousands of dollars and hundreds if not thousands of gifts for children who had to spend their holidays in a hospital. Gamers are just average everyday people trying to have some fun, and it just so happens that playing GTA and other games is how we do it. And as you can tell from Childs Play, when we work together, we can do amazing things.

Oh, and one more thing. Are you telling me that Micheal Jackson being charged with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of using intoxicants, drugs or alcohol to subdue children is ok, yet shooting a couple of virtual bad guys is not? Wow, nice job buddy, really nice. Hey everyone, stop playing Vice City and go rape some children! By the way, I'm sorry if I kind of went back and forth in my little e-mail, but I just get incredibly annoyed when I go online to see someone saying yet another derogatory comment relating to a certain video game or all video games in general.

Thank you, and have a nice day,
- Al, the Gamer

man that guys a moron personally i don't know why they're picking on GTA its the same old stuff thats been in almost every video game just subtract the car theft. **** they didn't get mad a Half-Life when you shot a guy with a sniper rifle in TFC and his entire body exploded into gibs along with tons and tons of blood. Also they didn't get mad at Unreal Tournament when you shot somone in the head and thier head poped of like in GTA personally I think they're getting upset over nothing. The games graphics aren't even that great unlike what the writer said realistic my ass they look cartoonish which is what makes the game so funny.

Fortunately, that got resolved - Rockstar's going to change the text so it doesn't say "Kill All Haitians." Stupid, but it took care of the problem. Oh, and probably some money helped, too...

technically they didn't have to according to the first ammendment but lately these days the government seems to think we don't have rights.

That's the First Amendment...and this issue is irrelevant from that. The Haitians weren't opposing the Government, they were opposing RockStar, and Take Two.Beacause Congress and The Government were not part of this dispute.

Well, you'd be surprised at the issues people call first amendment issues. Generally, they say that any time that someone wants to say something, and someone else doesn't want them to.

In this case, though, I think the court didn't consider it a free speech issue, because making a threat against people isn't protected, even under free speeches. Of course, I was a Spanish major, not a Political Science major...

They don't really mean to offend the Haitian population. It's just part of the game.

This entire thing with Grand Theft Auto is being blown out of proportion because it is a slow time in news. I think it would be best for them to just leave Grand Theft Auto be and let it die peacefully (when it does die). I wouldn't worry so much about the issue of people's bitching (if we can have retards like Eminem and half the **** that is in the movies and TV, GTA will go no where soon) however I would worry about those bad investments they made, that could seriously damage the company.

Anyways on about the whole it being worse than child moestation thing. First off this guy is basically agreeing that child molestation isn't all that bad and everyone should do it, if a videogame, a videogame is worse than it. So everyone go find the nearest child and GET IT ON, let them know the news told you so!

Secondly, how the hell can they blame a game? This guy's generation has thousands of murders who used to play Cops & Robbers, "kill the Indian", "Lynch the blackman" and whatever the hell else games that are considered completely wrong by today's standards.
Kids back then also watched bugs bunny plug rifles up with his finger and the rifles backfire in Elmer Fudd's face and everyone was still fine. So your always going to have your evils, it just depends on if your kids are stupid or not. Sorry to say though, but if a game can warp your kids mind, suffice to say
he had it coming.

I was very angry when I read a lot of that stuff in that article, I even thought that perhaps we could see a major crash in the industry if something that terrible happened, but if it did, we will always find our next Mortal Kombat, or GTA......Nuns who kill bunnies anyone?
