TOKYO--After months of analyst speculation that the Sony PlayStation Portable might not make it out this year, Sony Computer Entertainment today dispelled these notions when it announced that it will, in fact, release the PSP in Japan on December 12. The next-generation handheld gaming device will be priced at 19,800 yen ($185), which is fairly close to the already-announced price point of the Nintendo DS, which is slated to hit Japan on December 2 for 15,000 yen ($140).

Of further note, the PSP will be available in a number of different packages. The normal edition PSP package will include the handheld itself, an AC adapter, and a battery pack. The PSP will also be offered in a value pack that's 5,000 yen more expensive at 24,800 yen ($232), which, in addition to the accessories included in the normal package, will come with a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, a set of headphones with a remote control, and a carrying case.

The accessories, of course, will also be available for purchase separately. The 32MB Memory Stick Duo and headphones with remote will be offered at 2,800 yen each ($26), and the carrying case will be offered at 2,000 yen ($19). Additional rechargeable batteries will cost 4,800 yen ($45), and a spare AC adapter can be purchased at 3,500 yen ($33).

In addition, today Sony Computer Entertainment finally made an official statement concerning the battery life of the PSP: The handheld's rechargeable Lithium Ion battery will allegedly last for four to six hours for gameplay, on average, and four to five hours for movies, on average.

Thats not really a bad price, but I am not into handheld gaming. I just run a few games here and there on my PocketPC.

I shoulda made a bet on the price. I was so on the money.

Why are some people so pessimistic?

Thats my plan. To get the DS for Xmas, maybe, and get the PSP myself.

The battery life is a major downside, unfortunately. Perhaps it won't be as big of a deal in Japan, but Americans are always "on the go," and need that thing to keep going for more than 4-6 hours between charges. I may be one of the only people with no interest in the PSP.

Well this came up a bit sudden now didn't it. It should help the PSP anyway, I'd be interested to see a western release date too. However the battery life stil isn't all that flash.

Well, you also have the option of purchasing a second battery.

The DS will only have a 10 hour lifespan.

exactly, 10 hours vs. 4-6. I know which I'd pick.

You also have to keep in mind PSP is actually backlit by the screen and not lights on the side. the PSP has perfect audio, moving media, etc, etc. 6 hrs still is not bad.

I agree John.

i dont have any intrest in it. plus the battery life of the DS is that of teh GBA SP, which is more like 11 or 12 hours, and both of the DS screens are fully back lit (all according the Seatle conference and from IGN's hands on report from said conference)

Actually, IGN's definition of "Backlit" means it has pretty lights on it. technically speaking it is side lit, as it is lit ...from the side.

Backlit goku, it's backlit.

It's sidelit. Honest.

GBASP was frontlit but DS is backlit, unless you can find a press release saying otherwise. IGN didn't just say "ThEY aRe BakLIt!!!" they explained how they were backlit and and how they effected the viewing of the screens

yeah, but...Well...IGN likes boys. Little boys. Yes, I went there.

Um, this "side-lit" crap is new to me. Only thing I've ever heard is that it is back-lit, and I'm willing to say for sure that that is true. As someone else has said, GBA SP was front-lit, but NDS is back-lit, simple as that.

I'll probably not get either .. but if I did I would go for the PSP.

Honestly I dont want to get a new toy right now. I'm already blowing to much money on my car, xbox and computer. I dont need another temptation lurking in the corner.
