This is a simple question but will probaly have a large answer.

I want to be able to stick a dvd into my drive, save it to my harddrive, then be able to convert it to a AVI so I can view it easily.

To rip the DVD I've tried DVD Shrink which is supposed to be one of the top rippers out there (along with dvd decrypter). After shrink rips the files I get file extensions I've never seen before... there are about 15 files and they all have an extension of IFO, VOB, BUP.

So how do I convert VOB to AVI/MPEG/MOV?

damn i only know how to do the exact oposite but Nero might be able to convert it to avi like it converts AVI to MPEG or VCD and save it as an ISO on your computer then extract it with winISO

The problem with those they are limited and things they do not allow you to do, hell some put watermarks on your videos! To me thats serious BS so I went searching around on a "Pirating Site I wont Mention Here" and they recommended DVD2AVI which is a freeware program. I'm still having problems with using it (Getting the sound to sync with the video) but hopfully I can figure it out.

What they said they use...

Ripper: DVD Shrink (Hella fast, but less quality) / Decrypter (Better quality but slower) since I'm going to resize the video WAY below the normal widescreen ratio quality isnt a big issue so DVD Shrink it was.

Converter: DVD2AVI It does NOT convert the VOB (DVD) files it just relinks a avi extension to the VOB files... I was kind of confused at first... So with DVD2AVI you just pick your Track (Language) and alot of fancy sound and video options. DVD2AVI can read the VOB files once I alter them and I can preview them live.

Saver? (Not sure what to call it): TMPGEnc takes the d2v (DVD2AVI) files and you have to Sync the video and the sound which i cannot find out how to do at the moment but I think it was something I did with DVD shrink so I'm going to retry today to see if I can figure it out.

Hmm, not have tried this task before. I love DVD Shrink, but I use it to copy a DVD borrowed or rented into a new DVD. Have not tried to make it an avi or mpeg, etc.

Let me check one of my sources and get back to you...

Wolf that is alot easier to do (Since I've done it before :dozey: ) because Shrink now works in conjunction with Nero burning software (5.5 or higher) so that makes copying dvds alot nicer.
